PILEDRIVER – History

How quickly time flies by… Already 30 years have passed since PILEDRIVER was established by Michael Sommerhoff and Peter Wagner, who were introduced to rock music by the classic bands of the 1970s and 1980s – the likes of AC/DC, Deep Purple, UFO, Van Halen and – of course – Status Quo, to name a few of their main influence factors.

Originally founded as a Quo-Tribute Band PILEDRIVER started with the intention to not only preserve but also continue the legacy the “Real Status Quo” of the 1970s (also referred to as the “Frantic Four”) left behind when they called it a day many years ago.

Working painstakingly on the arrangement details of the songs and the authenticity of their stage act PILEDRIVER established their reputation as “Europe´s finest SQ-tribute act”. “More Quo than Quo”, as a fan perfectly put it when he was asked what PILEDRIVER were all about.

While the years passed on the band played countless gigs throughout Europe and managed to gain a loyal following. Eventually PILEDRIVER became a household name in the classic rock scene. They released a couple of CDs that contained mainly original self-written material plus a DVD and a Blu-Ray.

PILEDRIVER – Standing Strong, Rocking Hard

Today, PILEDRIVER stands tall as an independent band with a sound entirely their own — authentic, powerful, and unmistakably classic. In 2015, the band signed with ROCKWALL RECORDS, a German label dedicated to classic rock. Around the same time, Stefan Kaufmann — former drummer of ACCEPT and ex-guitarist of U.D.O. — came on board as the band’s producer. The internationally seasoned musician took PILEDRIVER under his wing, helping to refine their sound without compromising their raw energy.

Together, they recorded BROTHERS IN BOOGIE, an album that received rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Just a year later, PILEDRIVER followed up with a live concert film on Blu-ray, including a double live CD — a release that captured the band’s on-stage fire and musicianship. In late 2018, they delivered another milestone with the album ROCKWALL, firmly cementing their status as a powerhouse of hard-hitting, classic rock.

Now, right on time for their 30th anniversary, PILEDRIVER are set to release their brand-new album FIRST NATIONS ROCK in November 2025. The record will be available as an elaborately designed 6-panel CD digipak with a 24-page booklet, as well as a 2LP gatefold vinyl edition featuring a double-sided printed poster. The vinyl version includes a bonus track, bringing the total to 15 brand-new songs — a dynamic mix of high-energy classic rock anthems, melodic hooks, and heartfelt ballads.

With FIRST NATIONS ROCK, PILEDRIVER deliver a timeless yet contemporary statement — music that celebrates their roots while reflecting today’s world through powerful lyrics and passionate performances.
